Innovative diagnostic tools to combat rising antibiotic-resistant microbes

Written by Acutis | May 9, 2022 4:00:00 AM

A global health threat, if the health community and policymakers do not take urgent action, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is in line to cause approximately 10 million fatalities per year by 2050.

Proven tools like Acutis Reveal™ can identify gram-negative and gram-positive pathogens, promptly provide their antimicrobial susceptibility profile and are followed by antibiotic sensitivity testing (AST) information to prevent potential misuse or overuse of antibiotics – a significant factor contributing to AMR. However, further exploration and utilization of innovative diagnostic tools throughout the world are required to keep up with the global pace of AMR.

Scientists are developing assays that are more commonly associated with the physical sciences than with microbiology labs to identify the pathogen and AST simultaneously. Some techniques under development can gauge microbial growth by measuring molecular markers and physical parameters like an electrical current. Much research is also dedicated to developing a ‘microbial signature’ that can successfully forecast future AMR before they become a problem.

This innovative research mainly focuses on highly effective, low-cost, point-of-care diagnostics to battle increasing AMR worldwide.
